Η πρόσφατη έκκληση του Σεβασμιωτάτου Μητροπολίτου Αρούσας κ. Αγαθόνικου για τη συνδρομή όλων στο πρόγραμμα εκπαιδευτικών υιοθεσιών, που θεσπίστηκε πρόσφατα από την Ι. Μητρόπολη για μαθητές όλων των βαθμίδων εκπαίδευσης, συνεκίνησε τους φίλους του έργου της Ιεραποστολής.
Η μεγάλη ανταπόκριση του κόσμου είναι η απόδειξη ότι, όταν ενωνόμαστε για έναν ιερό σκοπό, μπορούμε να χαρίσουμε ελπίδα, δύναμη και ζωή.
Στηρίξτε κι εσείς αυτή την προσφορά αγάπης, για να καταφέρουμε να χαρίσουμε το πολύτιμο αγαθό της γνώσης και στα φτωχά παιδιά της Τανζανίας και να θέσουμε τα θεμέλια για ένα καλύτερο αύριο.

Όταν πριν από δύο χρόνια πορεύτηκα για πρώτη φορά στην άγνωστη και
μακρινή Πέμπτη Ήπειρο, την Αυστραλία, με την ευλογία του Πατρός και
Πατριάρχη Αλεξανδρείας κ.κ. Θεοδώρου, ένιωθα ανήσυχος, ίσως και κάπως
φοβισμένος, μπροστά στο άγνωστο και στη διαφορετική νοοτροπία των
ανθρώπων. Όλα έμοιαζαν καινούργια, και τα μεγέθη ασύλληπτα σε σύγκριση
με την Ελλάδα, και ακόμη πιο ασύλληπτα όταν τα συνέκρινα με τη φτωχική Νότια Μαδαγασκάρη, όπου διακονώ ταπεινά. Όμως, ο Θεός πάντα παρηγορεί
και ανοίγει δρόμους. Και τότε ξαφνικά ήρθε στην καρδιά μου η ιστορία του
Αβραάμ και η φωνή του Θεού που έλεγε: «Πήγαινε εκεί που θα σου δείξω».
Όταν ακολουθήσεις τη φωνή του Θεού, ποτέ δεν θα το μετανιώσεις. Το
ταξίδι αυτό υπήρξε πραγματικά ένα θαύμα. Η ευχή του Σεβασμιωτάτου
Αρχιεπισκόπου Αυστραλίας κ.κ. Μακαρίου και το έμπρακτο πατρικό του
ενδιαφέρον για τις ανάγκες της Ιεραποστολής, η αρωγή των Επισκόπων του, η
συμπαράσταση του κλήρου και του λαού, υπήρξαν κάτι παραπάνω από
συγκινητικά. Ήταν σαν να ζούσα στα πρώτα αποστολικά χρόνια, όταν οι
εύρωστες Κοινότητες στήριζαν τις φτωχότερες, και έτσι άρχισε να
γεννιέται το θαύμα.
Στην καρδιά της Νότιας Μαδαγασκάρης, εκεί όπου η παιδεία δεν είναι
αυτονόητο δικαίωμα αλλά προνόμιο για λίγους, το θαύμα έλαβε σάρκα και
οστά. Ένα σχολείο – Δημοτικό, Γυμνάσιο και Λύκειο – στέκει τώρα ως φάρος
γνώσης και ελπίδας για 510 παιδιά, φωτίζοντας το μέλλον τους με την
αλήθεια της μάθησης.
Αυτό το θαύμα γεννήθηκε από μια ανιδιοτελή αγάπη. Η Αρχιεπισκοπή
Αυστραλίας, υπό την καθοδήγηση του πολυσεβάστου Αρχιεπισκόπου Μακαρίου,
ενός εμπνευσμένου Ιεράρχη και ανθρώπου ανοικτών οριζόντων, έσκυψε με
πατρική στοργή πάνω από τις ανάγκες της Ιεραποστολής στην Τολιάρα. Με
μια κίνηση αγάπης και φιλαδελφίας, χάρισε στην Ιερά Επισκοπή Τολιάρας
και Νοτίου Μαδαγασκάρης ένα ολόκληρο σχολικό συγκρότημα, προσφέροντας
στα παιδιά αυτό που τόσο απεγνωσμένα ζητούσαν: μια ευκαιρία να μάθουν,
να εξελιχθούν, να ονειρευτούν ένα καλύτερο μέλλον κι έναν καλύτερο
κόσμο.
Η δωρεά αυτή δεν είναι απλώς ένα κτίριο. Είναι μια ζωντανή μαρτυρία
χριστιανικής αδελφοσύνης και αλληλεγγύης, ένα έργο που αποδεικνύει ότι η
αγάπη δεν γνωρίζει αποστάσεις, σύνορα, λαούς και φυλές. Από την
Αυστραλία ως τη Μαδαγασκάρη, η γέφυρα της προσφοράς χτίστηκε με
προσευχές, θυσίες και αληθινή φροντίδα για τον πάσχοντα αδελφό, για το
ορφανό παιδί, για τον ίδιο τον Χριστό τελικά. Διότι η προσφορά σε έναν
από τους ελάχιστους αδελφούς μας είναι προσφορά στον Χριστό.
Σήμερα, μέσα στις αίθουσες αυτού του σχολείου, του σχολείου με την
επωνυμία «Αρχιεπίσκοπος Μακάριος», 510 παιδιά γελούν, γράφουν,
διαβάζουν, ονειρεύονται. Παιδιά που κάποτε δεν είχαν πρόσβαση στη γνώση,
κρατούν στα χέρια τους βιβλία, σχηματίζουν τα πρώτα τους γράμματα,
αποκτούν ελπίδα. Η φλόγα της μάθησης ανάβει σε κάθε βλέμμα, σε κάθε φωνή
που απαγγέλλει με περηφάνια μια λέξη που έμαθε.
Η Ιερά Επισκοπή Τολιάρας και Νοτίου Μαδαγασκάρης, με συγκίνηση και
ευγνωμοσύνη, υψώνει δοξολογία στον Θεό και εκφράζει την πιο βαθιά της
ευχαριστία προς την Ιερά Αρχιεπισκοπή Αυστραλίας και τον Σεβασμιώτατο
Αρχιεπίσκοπο κ.κ. Μακάριο. Αυτή η δωρεά δεν είναι απλώς μια κίνηση
φιλανθρωπίας· είναι μια επένδυση στις ψυχές των παιδιών, ένας σπόρος που
θα καρποφορήσει σε μια κοινωνία φωτισμένη από τη γνώση και την πίστη.
Είθε η χάρη του Θεού να ευλογεί πάντοτε αυτούς που ανοίγουν δρόμους
για τα παιδιά του κόσμου. Στην Ιερά Αρχιεπισκοπή Αυστραλίας και στον
Σεβασμιώτατο Αρχιεπίσκοπο κ.κ. Μακάριο, η Εκκλησία της Ν. Μαδαγασκάρης
απευθύνει ένα ταπεινό αλλά εκ βάθους καρδίας «ευχαριστώ». Μέσα από την
αγάπη τους δεν χτίστηκε απλώς ένα σχολείο· χτίστηκε ένα μέλλον γεμάτο
ελπίδα.
Αυτό το ταπεινό «ευχαριστώ» των παιδιών της Ν. Μαδαγασκάρης και το
δικό μου ήλθα για να κομίσω αυτές τις ημέρες στον σεβάσμιο και
πρεσβύτερο αδελφό Αρχιεπίσκοπο Μακάριο και σε όλο τον ευλογημένο κλήρο
και λαό της Ιεράς Αρχιεπισκοπής Αυστραλίας, και να εκζητήσω και πάλι το
έλεος της ευρύχωρης καρδιάς τους.
Αναχωρώ από την Αυστραλία με την καρδιά πλημμυρισμένη από αγάπη και
ευγνωμοσύνη, και με τη νοσταλγία ήδη να με κυριεύει για τα όσα όμορφα
και πνευματικά που μου χάρισε η Αυστραλία.
Σας περιμένουμε, Σεβασμιώτατε Άγιε Αυστραλίας, στην Τολιάρα, να δείτε
τα καλά έργα των χειρών σας και να ακούσετε το «ευχαριστώ» των παιδιών
μας. Αυτό μόνο έχει αξία και όχι τα δικά μου άτεχνα λόγια… Αείποτε
ευγνώμονες!
Η Φιλοθέη, μια κόρη σεμνή και με πολύ φόβο Θεού και υπάκουη στον
πνευματικό της, μεγάλωσε σαν όλα τα κορίτσια αλλά σε μια φτωχή
οικογένεια. Με πλησίασε μια μέρα, την είδα στεναχωρημένη και μου λέει:
Πάτερ, πονάει η καρδιά μου! Όπως ξέρετε, είμαι στην Γ΄ Λυκείου. Σε δύο
εβδομάδες δίνουμε εξετάσεις, όμως, μέχρι τώρα δεν έχω καταφέρει να
πληρώσω τα δίδακτρα.
Προσπάθησα να μιλήσω με τους γονείς μου. Η απάντηση που μου δώσανε με
τάραξε και αποφάσισα να κρεμαστώ. Τους έχω γράψει μια διαθήκη, για να
την διαβάσουν μετά το θάνατο μου.
—Τι σου είπαν οι γονείς σου; —Μου είπαν και οι δύο: είσαι μεγάλη.
Να πας να κάνεις αυτά που κάνουν τα κορίτσια στους δρόμους. Θα βρεις
χρήματα εύκολα, εμείς δεν έχουμε να σου δώσουμε! —Δώσ’ μου τη διαθήκη να τη δω.
Μου την έδωσε, την άνοιξα και τι έλεγε μέσα! «Αγαπητοί μου γονείς, με
δάκρυα σας γράφω τις λίγες αυτές γραμμές. Χίλιες φορές θα δώσω τη ζωή
μου στον Χριστό μου, θα του δώσω και την παρθενία μου. Θα τερματίσω τη
ζωή μου σήμερα, αντί να υπακούσω στη διαβολική εντολή σας. Φεύγω
στεναχωρημένη από αυτή την ζωή, ποτέ δεν θα κάνω αυτό που μου λέτε. Δεν
περίμενα από σας τέτοιες σκέψεις για μένα. Δεν έχω γνωρίσει άντρα. Είναι
καλό για μένα να φύγω από αυτή την ζωή, αλλά φεύγω στεναχωρημένη. Να
μας συγχωρεί ο Θεός…»
—Πάτερ μου, όταν βγήκα στον δρόμο, είπα μέσα μου: Πώς να πάω να
κρεμαστώ χωρίς να το ξέρει ο πνευματικός μου; Γι’ αυτό ήρθα να σας τα
πω, πριν πάω, επειδή εσείς με καθοδηγήσατε σ’ όλη μου τη ζωή. —Παιδάκι
μου, δεν έχω χρήματα να σου δώσω. Είμαι φτωχός, αλλά έχω πίστη. Θα
κάνουμε συμφωνία οι δυο μας τώρα με τον Θεό και θα του πούμε το εξής:
«Θεέ και Δέσποτα της ζωής μας, σε αγαπάμε και σε ικετεύουμε, βοήθησέ μας
και ελέησέ μάς!»
Βαπτίσεις στην Γκόμα
Αυτή ήταν η προσευχή μας. Τότε της είπα: θα κρατήσω τη διαθήκη και το σχοινί. Εάν δε μας βοηθήσει ο Θεός, τότε έλα να τα πάρεις.
Έφυγε η 17χρονη κοπέλα. Μετά από μια εβδομάδα, την σταμάτησε στον
δρόμο ένα άγνωστο πρόσωπο, άνδρας σε μεγάλη ηλικία, και της λέει:
«Κορίτσι μου σε βλέπω λυπημένη, τι έχεις;». Η κοπέλα τού είπε το πρόβλημά
της, και τι απάντηση πήρε; Ο γηραιός κύριος άνοιξε την τσάντα του, της
έδωσε τα διπλάσια από ό,τι είχε ανάγκη και εξαφανίστηκε!
Την άλλη μέρα, η κοπέλα ήρθε σε μένα με τα χρήματα. Της είπα, άντε να
πληρώσεις. Είναι εκ Θεού, μη φοβάσαι! Η Φιλοθέη μας έδωσε εξετάσεις,
πέρασε τις εξετάσεις, πέρασε στο πανεπιστήμιο και βρίσκεται στο τρίτο
έτος. Αδελφοί μου, μόνο η πίστη προς τον Θεό θα μας σώσει και η υπακοή
στον πνευματικό μας πατέρα. Ο πονηρός που οδήγησε τον Ιούδα να
κρεμαστεί, δεν έχει σταματήσει με τα κόλπα του, χορεύει μέρα νύχτα και
ψάχνει ποιον να αρπάξει. Να παρακαλούμε τον Κύριο να μας φωτίσει και το
έλεός του να μας καθοδηγήσει στους αιώνες των αιώνων.

Ιανουαρίου 2018. Ήμασταν ήδη μια εβδομάδα στη Σιέρρα Λεόνε,
προσκεκλημένοι του Ιεραποστόλου πατρός Θεμιστοκλή Αδαμόπουλου. Είχαμε
συγκλονιστεί από τις αλλεπάλληλες εικόνες ανθρώπων σε κατάσταση έσχατης
ένδειας. Δεν μπορούσαμε να φανταστούμε ότι η επίσκεψη που είχε
οργανώσει ο πατήρ Θεμιστοκλής στην παραγκούπολη του Κρου Μπέι θα ήταν
πραγματική γροθιά στο στομάχι.
Η συνοικία Κρου Μπέι όπου χτίστηκε το νέο σχολείο της ορθόδοξης ιεραποστολής
Όταν
φτάσαμε στον συνοικισμό και αρχίσαμε να οσφραινόμαστε τη βαριά μυρωδιά
της ατμόσφαιρας, συνειδητοποιήσαμε την χαώδη διαφορά ενός ντοκιμαντέρ
για την Αφρική που παρακολουθείς αναπαυτικά μέσα στην άνεση του σπιτιού
σου, όσο ρεαλιστικό κι αν είναι, από τη ζωντανή, εφιαλτική
πραγματικότητα, η οποία σε τσακίζει, σε διαλύει, σε κάνει να
αισθάνεσαι ένοχος γι’ αυτό που είσαι, για τις όποιες μικρές ή μεγάλες
ανέσεις απολαμβάνεις.. Να νιώθεις αίσθημα μεγάλης αδικίας να σε πνίγει.
Καθώς προχωρούσαμε σοκαρισμένοι, φτάσαμε στην γέφυρα του Τζώρτζ Μπρούκ. Οι σκηνές που αντικρίσαμε ξεπερνούσαν κάθε φαντασία. Ένας
κατάμαυρος χείμαρρος αποβλήτων κυλούσε αργά κάτω από τα πόδια μας,
ανάμεσα σε τόνους απορριμμάτων, δημιουργώντας αφόρητα αποπνικτική
ατμόσφαιρα, την οποία επέτειναν δεκάδες χοίροι που περιφέρονταν
ελεύθεροι ανάμεσα στα σκουπίδια και μέσα στα λύματα. Στις όχθες
του, σειρά νοικοκυριών στεγασμένων σε παράγκες φτιαγμένες από
σκουριασμένες λαμαρίνες δημιουργούσε εφιαλτικό σκηνικό. Άνθρωποι
περιφέρονταν ανάμεσα στα σκουπίδια, μέσα στα λύματα και δίπλα στους
περιπλανώμενους χοίρους, ενώ παιδιά έπαιζαν με αντικείμενα που είχαν
μαζέψει από αυτά ή με αυτοσχέδιους αετούς που είχαν φτιάξει, σχίζοντας
με τα δόντια τους σακούλες από τα σκουπίδια.
Απέναντι
από τη γέφυρα ανοιγόταν μία αλάνα και δεξιά της ένα καταθλιπτικό κτήριο
που έμοιαζε με κρατητήριο. Για να μπεις σ’ αυτό, έπρεπε να υπερπηδήσεις
φράχτη από τσιμεντόλιθους που εμπόδιζαν τα μολυσμένα νερά του Τζώρτζ
Μπρούκ να πλημμυρίσουν τον χώρο κατά την μακρά περίοδο των βροχών. Όπως
πληροφορηθήκαμε, ήταν το Δημοτικό Σχολείο του οικισμού, το οποίο είχε
κτίσει μία μη κυβερνητική φιλανθρωπική οργάνωση πριν από μερικά
χρόνια.
Δρασκελώντας τον φράχτη, μπήκαμε στο σχολείο. Το
καταθλιπτικό περιβάλλον, που περισσότερο θύμιζε κελί φυλακής παρά
σχολείο, σε συνδυασμό με την άθλια κατάσταση του εσωτερικού του κτηρίου
μας είχε αφήσει άφωνους. Σκεφτόμασταν τι μάθημα να έκαναν τα
δυστυχισμένα αυτά παιδιά σ’ έναν τέτοιο χώρο, σ’ ένα τέτοιο περιβάλλον.
Ο
πατήρ Θεμιστοκλής κοιτούσε θλιμμένος γύρω του και σε μία στιγμή τον
ακούμε να μονολογεί: «Να είχα τα χρήματα να αναλάβει η Ιεραποστολή αυτό
το σχολείο, να δώσουμε σ’ αυτά τα τόσο πονεμένα κι αδικημένα παιδιά μία
ελπίδα…!» και απευθυνόμενος σε μας λέει: «Θα μπορούσαμε να κάνουμε κάτι
γι’ αυτά τα παιδιά;» Το έλεγε κι ένας βαθύς πόνος έβγαινε από την καρδιά
του. Αυθόρμητα απαντήσαμε: «Θα κάνουμε ό,τι μπορούμε, πάτερ».Κάναμε
έναν πρόχειρο οικονομικό προϋπολογισμό του έργου κι αρχίσαμε να
μοιραζόμαστε το άπιαστο όνειρό μας με τους συνανθρώπους μας στην Ελλάδα.
Και το θαύμα έγινε. Μέσα σε πέντε μήνες συγκεντρώθηκε όλο σχεδόν το
ποσό που απαιτούνταν για να ξεκινήσει το έργο.
Σάββατο 10
Νοεμβρίου 2018. Έντεκα μήνες ακριβώς από την πρώτη επίσκεψή μας στην
παραγκούπολη Κρού Μπέι, μας αξίωσε και πάλι ο Θεός να βρισκόμαστε εκεί
για την θεμελίωση του σχολείου.Σήμερα το καταθλιπτικό εκείνο
κελί-σχολείο αποτελεί παρελθόν. Κατεδαφίστηκε. Στην θέση του
ανεγείρεται ένα λιτό σύγχρονο καλαίσθητο κτήριο επτά αιθουσών, που θα
ανταποκρίνεται πλήρως στις εκπαιδευτικές ανάγκες των διακοσίων και πλέον
μαθητών, πού κατά την ερχόμενη σχολική χρονιά συν Θεώ θα το γεμίσουν
χαρούμενες φωνές.
Η νέα πρόκληση που ανοίγεται τώρα μπροστά μας είναι η λειτουργία και η συντήρηση του έργου.
Στο χέρι μας είναι να καταστεί το έργο αυτό φωτεινός φάρος, που θα
δώσει ελπίδα στους ανθρώπους της τόσο υποβαθμισμένης αυτής περιοχής και
θα τους βοηθήσει να δουν το μέλλον με περισσότερη αισιοδοξία. Στο χέρι μας είναι να μην μείνει κανένας μαθητής του σχολείου ούτε μία ημέρα χωρίς εκπαίδευση και φαγητό.

Στηρίξτε την λειτουργία και συντήρηση του σχολείου στο Κρου Μπέι, στη Σιέρρα Λεόνε :
Σε λιγότερο από δύο χρόνια, σε
μια από τις πιο εξαθλιωμένες περιοχές του πλανήτη μας, την παραγκούπολη
Κρού Μπέι στην πρωτεύουσα Φριτάουν της πάμφτωχης Σιέρρα Λεόνε,
με δωρητές από την Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό ολοκληρώσαμε την ανέγερση
ενός σύγχρονου Δημοτικού Σχολείου που θα ανταποκρίνεται πλήρως στις
εκπαιδευτικές ανάγκες των δασκάλων και των διακοσίων και πλέον μαθητών
που την ερχόμενη σχολική χρονιά θα το πλημμυρίσουν με τις παιδικές τους
φωνές.
Ψυχή αυτής της μεγάλης προσπάθειας ήταν ο συνεργάτης μας και καθηγητής Θεολογίας του 1ου Γυμνασίου Χαλανδρίου κ. Ιωάννης Περράκης
ο οποίος επισκεπτόμενος δύο φορές την Σιέρρα Λεόνε και αντικρίζοντας
την ζοφερή εικόνα του Κρου Μπέι ξεκίνησε την συγκέντρωση χρημάτων
ευαισθητοποιώντας φίλους και γνωστούς. Μέχρι σήμερα δαπανήθηκαν ενενήντα
χιλιάδες ευρώ και υπολείπεται ο εξοπλισμός του Σχολείου που θα κοστίσει δέκα χιλιάδες ευρώ.
Το έργο
αυτό είναι καθοριστικής σημασίας για την περιοχή αν αναλογιστεί κανείς
ότι διαγράφεται μία νέα πορεία για τα παιδιά των ευάλωτων αυτών
κοινωνικών στρωμάτων που η μοίρα τα έφερε να ζουν σε πάμφτωχες
κοινότητες. Παρόμοια προγράμματα στηρίζει ο Οργανισμός μας και σε άλλα υπανάπτυκτα κράτη.
Μέλημά μας τώρα είναι να στηριχθεί η λειτουργία αυτού του τόσο σημαντικού έργου. Να
καλύπτουμε σε μόνιμη βάση τα λειτουργικά έξοδα, τους μισθούς των
δασκάλων, το αναγκαίο εκπαιδευτικό υλικό, την καθαριότητα και την
καθημερινή σίτιση των παιδιών.
Βασιζόμενοι
στην αστείρευτη αγάπη όλων των συνανθρώπων μας και στην δική σας
προαίρεση, παρακαλούμε να στηρίξετε και αυτήν την προσπάθεια.

The
Venerable and Ancient Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa has
surprised us with its courage and initiative in the past. We need only
recall the appointment of deaconesses by His Beatitude, Pope and
Patriarch Theodoros II. While there was debate whether it constituted a
true “ordination” (cheirotonia), rather than a blessing (cheirothesia), the fact remains that the Patriarchate took an initiative in such matters.The same can be said regarding the
establishment of St. Mark’s Academy, offering theological education
through distance learning. Other such Academies exist, but St. Mark’s
promises a quality, contemporary, and challenging curriculum. Situated
in Johannesburg, South Africa, by making use of electronic media it
makes learning available to all, regardless of distance and location. In
addition, due to favourable exchange rates for foreign students,
tuition is affordable to many. The faculty presently consists of a
group of five highly qualified academics and an external independent
moderator. Between them, there are five with doctorates and one with a
master’s degree. More academics will be sourced as the need arises. The
staff also consists of persons responsible for administration and
financial issues. St. Mark’s pilot course is the
three-year Programme in Orthodox Christian Studies. It is not yet an
accredited diploma, but is recognized by the Church. The Academy has
been working together with the South African Department for Higher
Education for accreditation. Presently, they require that students be
present in Johannesburg for a formal written examination. This would
greatly add to the cost. The Academy is exploring other possibilities. The Programme covers the necessary
subjects of Scripture, doctrine, liturgics, and church history, but also
brings the faith to life as “theory becomes practice” in personal and
social ethics, spiritual life, and pastoral care. Students are
challenged to consider the relationship between the Church and the
churches, their differences in beliefs and outlook, and the dialogues
and meetings aiming at mutual understanding and greater unity.
Contemporary theologies—liberation, feminist, African, alternative,
etc.—are explored, as well as the Church’s response to these. Finally, a concise view of World
Religions is offered, together with modules in missiology—the mission of
the Church to the world and proclaiming the Gospel to all nations,
something very dear to the heart of this Patriarchate. It is possible that students may want to
take single modules from the Programme, but St Mark’s cannot guarantee
that, should the student be registered elsewhere, the credits would be
recognised. Each module includes an intensive
reading programme. The Academy is presently developing an online library
that contains the required and recommended set works. This is a
substantial savings in costs of books that would otherwise need to be
ordered. Students receive the syllabus, bibliography, and course
objectives. They are guided in their reading and are given a series of
questions and an essay topic to work on and submit within the allocated
time. The final semester requires a longer assignment or research
project on a topic of the student’s choice. After a successful three
years, the student receives a Certificate in Orthodox Christian
Theology. Short courses on various topics are offered at various times, but tend, for the moment, to require physical presence. Exciting prospects are open in the field
of post-graduate studies (master’s and doctorates) as the Academy
explores the prospect of “twinning” with a local, accredited college
that would offer the degrees the recognition that students deserve. St.
Mark’s will keep students and prospective students informed of
developments. Under the auspices of the Patriarchate
and the direction of Metropolitan Petros (Parginos) of Accra, who
recently attained his doctorate, the Academy already has numerous
students from such diverse places all over the world as Egypt, Italy,
Belgium, Portugal, Zambia, and South Africa. Registration may take place on one of two occasions, in time for the semester beginning in January or the one beginning in July. Metropolitan Petros (Parginos) of
Accra was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. After matriculating from
SAHETI School he studied English and Greek Literature at the
Universities of the Witwatersrand and of Johannesburg. He taught Greek
language and culture at Saheti and was appointed head of the Greek
Department for the high school. In 1998 he was ordained to the
diaconate and to the priesthood, and later obtained an MA in theology
from Balamand, focusing on ecclesiology, and a second MA from the
Catholic College of St Augustine in Johannesburg, focusing on
spirituality and the Orthodox neptic tradition. He attended courses in
Christian ethics, education, ecumenical and interreligious dialogue,
pastoral care, and psychology. He holds a Licentiate in Logotherapy
(existential psychology). In 2019 he completed a Doctorate
through the University of the North West, focusing on the dialogue of
the Orthodox Church with the Roman Catholic Church. In 2017, with the blessings of His
Beatitude, the Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa,
Theodoros II and of the Holy Synod, he founded, organised, and
administers St. Mark’s Academy, which offers theological education by
means of distance learning, using electronic and online means of
communication. His Eminence was ordained to the episcopate as Metropolitan of Accra on December 6, 2019. In his episcopal ordination speech (full texthere),
he called for a Church “that is not afraid to debate, not only with
other churches, confessions, and religions, but with the contemporary
world and the sciences,” a Church “that is the voice and the harbour of
the underprivileged, the persecuted, the forgotten, the marginalized,
those that have need of compassion and humanity.”

When you look into a mirror you can only see yourself and the
little part of the world behind you. Otherwise, when you look through a
window you are able to see the horizon, the sky, trees and the street
you can walk along.
Until now, many educational windows are still closed for a great amount
of African women; windows that symbolize career opportunities,
protection against exploitation, the chance to emancipate themselves,
the possibility to develop and to provide a basis for a better life.
The only way to turn all the mirrors of suppression and external
determination into windows is education! ...
Right to education
The Declaration of Human Rights contains among various others
the right to education.
Nevertheless this right is not observed in many
countries all over the world, due to a lack of resources for building
schools and due to the absence of teachers or because of cultural
reasons. Africa is an example for the disregard of the right to
education. There a great percentage of children is excluded from the
right to education; about 55 percent of the children who do not go to
school are female.

In order to point out some of the reasons why girls
aren’t allowed to go to school you could answer the question“Why are women and girls often excluded from the
access to
(higher) education?”
One reason, why girls often cannot go to
school is, that education is not accepted as an essential right in many
countries of Africa; and that is why there is not enough money spent
for building schools or to pay for teachers.
Girls – unworthy to be educated?
Another point is the traditional
role of girls and women in
African society.Their duty is to take care of the children
and the
household. And many fathers do not send their daughters to school for
that reason and because they think that the education of girls is not
as important as the education of boys. Due to the tradition that
daughters get married at a young age and therefore do not have the
possibility to take care of their parents when they get old, there is
no necessity to spend money on one´s daughter´s
education. The conviction of many African people that girls are stupid
and therefore education is wasted on girls also hinders many girls from
going to school.
And even if there were schools many parents would not let their
daughter go, fearing that their daughter would get harmed on her way to
school. To understand the urgency of fighting against the
contravention of the right to education, it is important to realize the
answer to the question “Why is education so
important for women in Africa?”
Escape from suppression
First of all education would enable women to
question the system of gender-related division of labor and the
dependence of a
woman on her husband. If women understood their suppressed and unjust
situation and role
in society -respectively in their families-, they
would consequently start to fight this injustice and offer their
children – especially their daughters – more
freedom of action and a greater range of self-determination.
That would entail an opportunity for the daughters to live a more
unconstrained life than their mothers have and an opportunity to break
out of this inflexible system of suppression.
In addition to that mothers, who are educated, would also impart a lot
of their knowledge to their children and therefore show them how
important education is.
They would give their children confidence and would probably take care
that they can go to school, too.
Besides that, women, who are able to read and to calculate, can protect
themselves from fraud when they buy food or other goods.
Another positive consequence would be, that higher educated women can
participate in politics and economics and be a role model for many
other African girls.
Education – a basis of health
Furthermore, if more girls and women in
Africa were enlightened on sexual matters and on the risk of a the
possible
infection with HIV or
other venereal diseases,
they would get to know
how to prevent these diseases and therefore begin to preserve their
health and help to slow down the spreading of HIV and additionally do a
more conscious family planning.
Education – a chance of survival
Basic knowledge in writing, reading and
calculating is a requirement for further vocational education and
development. It gives
women the chance to get a job, to earn money and to nourish their
children when their husbands leave the family. That happens frequently,
because African men often abandon their families just because the wife
was violated, although women can´t defend themselves against
abuse. Altogether education always means empowerment in every area of
life.
4-A scheme
It is important to offer the girls and all
other children in Africa an education that fits their life situation,
helps them to
understand their lives and to deal with it, as it promises them a
better life and helps them to get on in their course of life.
Therefore, education has to be accessible, acceptable and adaptable and
above all this it has to be available.
Education is only then available,
when there are enough schools in Africa, enough well educated teachers
and learning aids.
Education is only then accessible, when
every child in Africa has the possibility to
go to school, both physically and economically.
Education is only then acceptable, when
school is safe, lessons have a good quality and when
the culture of the area where children are educated is taken into
consideration.
Education is only then adaptable when one
is able to adapt
education to changes in society. [3]
To comply with all these conditions of good
and adjusted education is not easy, and to assist girls and women in
standing up for
their rights is not easy as well. But instead of being discouraged
because of these facts, everybody should – confirmed by all
the positive aspects of education – do whatever one can do to
provide girls and women in Africa with the education that everyone is
entitled to.

Late
on the afternoon of Thursday 8th November 2018, His Beatitude Theodoiros
II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Arica arrived in the
country of the blood diamonds, Sierra Leone, accompanied by
Archimandrite Athanasios Kayembe. At the airport His Beatitude was
welcomed by the local Metropolitan His Eminence George of Guinea, the
Ambassador of Egypt, the Chancellor of the Holy Metropolis of Guinea Fr.
Themistocles Adamopoulos, Representative of the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs and the Holy Clergy of Sierra Leone.
Then, in a special boat, the Patriarch went to the capital, Freetown, where reporters from the local Media were expecting him.
In his brief statements His Beatitude
referred to the importance that Sierra Leone holds in his heart, and
that with great joy he returns to the country after 6 years to
inaugurate the new Orthodox Church's schools.
On the morning of Friday 9th November,
His Beatitude attended the service at the Holy Church of Ss Constantine
and Helen for the feast of St Nektarios and then met with Mr Alie Kabba
the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The Minister welcomed the Patriarch to
Sierra Leone, thanked him for the wonderful work done by the Orthodox
Church in the country, particularly in the field of education and
assured him that the state would assist the efforts of the Alexandrian
Patriarchate.
His Beatitude, in turn, thanked him for
the warm welcome and hospitality and expressed his joy that he has
returned to such a troubled country to bless the new works done
exclusively for the children The Patriarch then went on to the St
Moses of Ethiopia Missionary Centre in the Waterloo area. He was
welcomed there by the Minister of Education, the Clergy and hundreds of
children from the Orthodox Schools.
The Doxology was sung in the Holy Church
and then His Beatitude did the Sanctification for the inauguration of
the first Orthodox Children’s Village for orphaned children who have
lost their parents and guardians due to the deadly Ebola virus.
The Orthodox Children's Village is a
model village for the Orthodox Church and there the orphaned children
will find maternal love and affection from surrogate mothers, shelter,
refuge, food, medical care and education.
His Beatitude, with deep emotion,
inaugurated the first two houses and blessed 24 orphaned children who
will be accommodated there. A festival followed in which all the
children participated.
At the beginning of the celebration, His
Eminence George welcomed the 117th successor of St Mark,
Theodoros II, and expressed his joy that on the day of his feast St
Nektarios led the Patriarch to the suffering land of Sierra Leone and
the children immediately broke out into cheers and applause.
Thereafter, His Eminence briefly
referred to the daily activities of the Patriarchate and to his
Missionary journeys throughout Africa and to the unique love he has for
all his spiritual children. In conclusion he congratulated Fr.
Themistocles and his colleagues on their daily struggle to support the
suffering people of Sierra Leone.
Thereafter, the Minister congratulated
the Patriarch for the Orthodox schools and their high standards and
promised that the Ministry of Education would always be at his side.
The wonderful celebration was brought to
a close by the Patriarch with words of love, thanking the friends of
the Missions throughout the world for supporting the struggle of the
Patriarchate and in conclusion thanked the Minister of Digital Policy,
Telecommunications and Information Mr. Nikos Papas and the Deputy
Minister Mr. Lefteris Kretsos, who gladly accepted his proposal and
agreed on the participation of a group from ERT on his journey to Sierra
Leone (you can see the video).
ERECTION OF AN ORTHODOX SCHOOL IN THE MOST IMPOVERISHED NEIGHBORHOOD OF THE PLANET
On the
afternoon of Saturday 10th November 2018, His Beatitude Theodoros II,
Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, laid the foundation
stone for the building of an Orthodox Primary School in the most
impoverished neighbourhood of the planet in the slum areas of Crew Bay
in the heart of the capital of Sierra Leone, where the Patriarch is on a
five-day visit. Twenty-seven thousand people live in
the slums of Crew Bay, 7 thousand of which are children, who truly live
under the most impoverished conditions existing on the planet and many
of these children die before they reach they age of five, due to their
lack of vaccinations. For the education of these children until today
there was a rudimentary school of two classes, with non-existent
sanitary facilities. In the torrential rains of last winter, the camp
lost 300 people, and more than 3,000 were forced to leave their homes.
The foundation stone was laid in the presence of the
mayor of the city, the Municipal Council and the members of the
Community of slum residents. With deep emotion His Beatitude thanked the
pupils of the 1ST High School in Halandri, who will be making a
decisive contribution to the building of the new school, which will
improve the quality of the education of the children from the slum area.
The representative of the residents of Crew Bay, emotionally thanked
the Orthodox Church for the God-loved work which they have undertaken to
bring to fruition in their slump camp, saying he is one of the children
who grew up there and who was deprived basic education and that for the
first time today he will sleep peacefully and joyfully.
Earlier the
Patriarch was warmly welcomed by the newly-elected Mayor Mrs. Yvonne
Aki Sawyer at the Municipality in the city, which during the tough years
of slavery, the slave traffickers used it as a place of keeping the
slaves, before they were loaded onto the ships bound for Brazil. The
capital of Sierra Leone is the city which received the first free slaves
who returned to Africa and that is the reason why it was named
Freetown. The Mayoress, deeply moved by the presence of
the Patriarch in her city, offered him the “key to the city” and thanked
him for the interest shown by the Orthodox Church in supporting the
suffering citizens of Freetown, particularly the little children. In his
reply the Patriarch thanked the Mayoress for the welcome and assured
her that the Patriarchate will always be present in all her efforts to
life the quality of life of the residents, not only of the capital but
of the entire country.
