secure.avaaz.org

The Mother’s Example & The Lesson of Love — A Shocking Encounter with Two Disabled Men in Kenya

The Two Disabled Children

My pastoral visits to different regions always reveal particular cases that, while they move me deeply, ultimately teach me profound lessons.

Every week I visit various parishes in remote areas to witness firsthand the efforts of our priests and to help accordingly—not only with advice and planning but also practically in building churches, clinics, schools, orphanages, and so on, as well as with feeding programs that provide a meal to the poor and forgotten orphaned children we encounter everywhere.

Although the journey was tiring, it didn’t discourage me. I always prioritize this mission. After conveying the message to both the priest and the parishioners about close cooperation and their contribution to development among the villagers, especially regarding charity work, the priest invited me to pray for two sick people.

A Shocking Encounter

Within minutes we reached our destination. We walked through the lush vegetation along a path. We arrived and were welcomed by a middle-aged woman.

She was happy to see us, especially that we would see her two sick sons. What a surprise and what pain, however, when we realized the condition of both patients… These were two boys who had been paralyzed since birth—and not only that. They couldn’t understand, couldn’t speak, couldn’t feel their legs or arms.

I made the sign of the cross and began with “Blessed is our God.” After reading the appropriate prayers with holy oil that I always carry for special cases, I anointed all parts of their bodies with their mother’s help. “For the healing of soul and body!” It wasn’t easy.

The Mother’s Example

I was amazed, however, by the mother. One was forty, the other twenty-five. Without a father, of course! What a cross! I thought. Such love, such sacrifice, such selflessness, I thought. I wondered again and again how this woman could single-handedly provide day and night care for these creatures of God all these years, without complaint, without weariness, silently and with such devotion.

Once again I remembered how we so-called faithful Christians complain and don’t think about how many people like us carry a permanent and unbearable burden in their lives—that of the cross.

How instructive this situation is, offering us an invitation rather than imposing it upon us, so we have this choice to freely decide whether we want to carry this cross that will become for us a revelation that we didn’t do what we thought we were doing, but what God Himself wanted. Our submission to God’s will was so positive and fruitful that in the end we have this great honor and blessing to enjoy the goods of His heavenly Kingdom.

Through all this we will better recognize and understand the value of life and our existence through the gospel virtues of purity, humility, selflessness, and gentleness.

The Lesson of Love

This mother with her two disabled children sits there and quietly offers her humble service without complaint, with selflessness and without seeking attention, inspired by the same love that Christ Himself offered to every person regardless of color, race, language, or origin.

This act of hers, therefore, builds unreservedly all the riches of her soul with the heavenly transfusions of God’s grace. Through her spiritual goodness and sincere humility without any self-promotion unfolds that virtue of love and mercy for which God of ultimate humility and compassion will reward her, since she has lived and practically applied the gospel teaching: “Let all that you do be done in love.”

Sierra Leone: Ban FGM Now!

avaaz.org

Kadijatu Allieu was tied up, beaten, blindfolded, and gagged. Then the women who had taken her mutilated her genitals with a razor and left her lying in a pool of blood for three days before she escaped.

In a historic act, she brought her case to West Africa’s highest court, and the judges JUST ruled that female genital mutilation (FGM) is a form of torture and Sierra Leone must ban it.

Sierra Leone’s President Bio is sympathetic, but Parliament is blocking. Now it’s up to his leadership to push the ban through. Let’s show him the world is with him! We did it in The Gambia, backing survivors and activists. Let’s do it again – and if enough of us sign, we’ll take our call directly to his office with Sierra Leone’s youth and a hard-hitting ad campaign. Sign now on this page.

To President Julius Maada Bio and all Members of Parliament, Sierra Leone:

As citizens from around the world, we are appalled that Sierra Leone’s law allows the cutting of girls’ genitals. We urge you to immediately implement the ruling of the Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), revise the Child Rights Act of 2025, and ban FGM. Protect the girls who haven’t yet been cut!

Muriel, Nate, Eza, Mo, Nadia, Huiting, Miguel, Antonia, Κατερίνα κι η ομάδα του Avaaz

Tidar (Marriage) - International Trailer

Tidar (Marriage) - International Trailer from Project dldl/ድልድል on Vimeo.

Based on real people's stories and testimonies collected through research in Ethiopia, docudrama Tidar (Marriage) tells the story of Genet, who is experiencing domestic violence, and presents her search for a moral and practical solution to her situation within the village community. It shows how the community responds to Genet’s predicament and how personal faith, religious mediation and theological teaching influence how she thinks through her situation. The aim of the film is to raise awareness about the complex role that religion can have in situations of domestic violence in the Ethiopian Orthodox community, influencing both victim and perpetrator rationalisations and behaviour.

The film is re-enacted by Amharic-speaking actors in Ethiopia, with subtitles being produced in Tigrigna, Afaan Oromo and English. The current trailer is the English international version.

The film was written and directed by Dr Romina Istratii and produced by Hermon Hailay and Max Conil of Exile Pictures and Yidnekachew Shumete of Kurat Pictures.

The production was funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) under the Future Leaders Fellowship grant 'Bridging religious studies, gender & development and public health to address domestic violence” (Grant Ref: MR/T043350/1) and is part of project dldl/ድልድል, a research and innovation project dedicated to the development and strengthening of religio-culturally sensitive domestic violence alleviation systems in East Africa and the UK: projectdldl.org

My Rafiki

Help save Amal from death by stoning (Sudan)

secure.avaaz.org

This is the cruel fate that Amal is facing in Sudan. She’s only 20 years old, and a judge decided she deserved to be tortured to death for adultery in the first stoning sentence in a decade.

But there is still hope: Amal has appealed the verdict, and the court could overturn the sentence and save her life.

There’s no time to waste: Amal is stuck in jail until the court decides her fate -- so let’s shine a bright spotlight on her case with a global show of solidarity and outrage. Add your name now and when it’s massive, we’ll take our call directly to key governments Sudan is trying to court, so they demand Amal's release. Sign now and share with everyone.

To the authorities of Sudan:

As citizens from around the world, we urgently call on you to overturn Amal’s cruel stoning death sentence, and to release her immediately in light of the deep irregularities in her trial. Sudan must ensure its criminal justice abides by international law, including the Convention against Torture.

Holy Virgin Martyr Irais (Rhais) of Alexandria (September 23)

Orthodox Church in America

The Holy Martyr Iraida lived at Alexandria. Once, she went to a well to draw water and saw a ship at the shore. On board were a large number of men, women, clergy and monks, all fettered in chains for their confession of the Christian Faith.

Casting aside her water pitcher, the saint voluntarily joined the prisoners for Christ, and fetters were placed on her, too. When the ship arrived in the Egyptian city of Antipolis, Saint Iraida was the first to undergo fierce torments and was beheaded with the sword. After her, the other martyrs sealed their confession of faith in Christ with their blood.

 Commemorated on September 23

Troparion — Tone 4

Your lamb Irais, / calls out to You, O Jesus, in a loud voice: / “I love You, my Bridegroom, / and in seeking You, I endure suffering. / In baptism I was crucified so that I might reign in You, / and I died so that I might live with You. / Accept me as a pure sacrifice, / for I have offered myself in love.” / Through her prayers save our souls, since You are merciful.

Book Description

This book provides a critical and decolonial analysis of gender and development theory and practice in religious societies through the presentation of a detailed ethnographic study of conjugal violence in Ethiopia.

Responding to recent consensus that gender mainstreaming approaches have failed to produce their intended structural changes, Romina Istratii explains that gender and development analytical and theoretical frameworks are often constructed through western Euro-centric lenses ill-equipped to understand gender-related realities and human behaviour in non-western religious contexts and knowledge systems. Instead, Istratii argues for an approach to gender-sensitive research and practice which is embedded in insiders’ conceptual understandings as a basis to theorise about gender, assess the possible gendered underpinnings of local issues and design appropriate alleviation strategies. Drawing on a detailed study of conjugal abuse realities and attitudes in two villages and the city of Aksum in Northern Ethiopia, she demonstrates how religious knowledge can be engaged in the design and implementation of remedial interventions.

This book carefully evidences the importance of integrating religious traditions and spirituality in current discussions of sustainable development in Africa, and speaks to researchers and practitioners of gender, religion and development in Africa, scholars of non-western Christianities and Ethiopian studies, and domestic violence researchers and practitioners.

Reviews

"Romina Istratii’s book is a refreshingly comprehensive exploration of the link between religious beliefs and practices and intimate partner violence. Her work is ambitious in scope, impressive in its breadth and depth, and an important contribution to any nuanced understanding of the impact of religion or abusive relationships in a local context. The myriad challenges she experiences in the execution of the research are thoughtfully discussed and her engagement with the relevant academic literature is noteworthy. As a result, her research will be useful to scholars in many fields." -- Nancy Nason-Clark, Professor Emerita, Department of Sociology, University of New Brunswick, Canada

"In this theoretically sophisticated and ethnographically grounded monograph – that focuses on Ethiopia - Romina Istratii questions ‘the idea of treating popular gender theories as globally relevant’ because they fail to view gender realities as ‘nuanced, complex and non-uniform’, as well as to consider how the ‘non-secular’ plays a role in shaping gender subjectivities and relations. This book is an important contribution to a growing field of studies that seeks to problematise the dominant secular Gender and Development paradigm, where it seeks to understand and transform gender relations, to eradicate social ills such as domestic violence, yet is underpinned by Euro-centric assumptions that are rarely addressed." -- Emma Tomalin, Professor in the School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science, Leeds University, UK.
