"Last night we had the absolute honour and blessing to meet and speak with Australia's very own Mother Theresa, Father Themi Adamopoulo,
whose Orthodox Mission of Sierra Leone is undertaking miraculous work
in the education, nourishment and fostering of orphans from the Ebola
virus, amputees from the civil war and destitute women and children. The
Mission's Teachers College involves Australians training the next
generation of Sierra Leonean teachers, and by turn today's children, to break the cycle of poverty and equip young adults with the necessary skills to achieve economic empowerment.
Father Themi's story is an inspiration for us all. From humble
middle class Greek Egyptian roots, he went on to be an active Marxist at
Melbourne Uni and member of The Flies rock band, to later denounce his
ideology and find solace in Orthodox Christianity as a theologian,
obtaining PhDs from Princeton and Monash.
In Africa, Fr Themi has
undertaken awe-inspiring work in Kenya, and in Sierra Leone since being
requested by its President almost one decade ago. With the support and
generosity of Australians, Americans and even Greeks despite the
economic crisis, may Fr Themi continue his trailblazing efforts in
Sierra Leone as he returns next week after one month in Australia. We
wish him well and pray for him and his Mission."
