«Νόμιμα» προϊόντα δουλείας & ναρκωτικά…

Αυτό το άρθρο δεν πρόκειται να αναφερθεί στο ερώτημα μήπως θα έπρεπε να απαγορευτεί η κυκλοφορία των τσιγάρων… Θα θέσουμε βέβαια το ερώτημα μήπως θα έπρεπε να κλείσουν εντελώς τα καζίνο και οι χαρτοπαιχτικές λέσχες, που αποτελούν σαφέστατα χώρους εξάρτησης ανθρώπων και απώλειας όχι μόνο περιουσιών, αλλά και οικογενειακών σχέσεων, ευτυχίας και, σε πολλές περιπτώσεις, της ίδιας της ζωής. Οι χώροι αυτοί λειτουργούν νόμιμα για φορολογικούς λόγους – είναι σαφές αυτό – καθώς και για την εξυπηρέτηση οικονομικών κύκλων μεγάλης δύναμης, σ’ ένα κράτος εντελώς αδιάφορο για τον άνθρωπο και δέσμιο με θρησκευτική προσήλωση στην ιδεολογία της απληστίας.

Κυρίως όμως επιθυμούμε ν’ αναφερθούμε σε θέματα λιγότερο συζητημένα. Και τούτα είναι κατά βάσιν τα προϊόντα δουλείας που χρησιμοποιούμε καθημερινά και οι εξαρτησιογόνες συσκευές που έχουν κατακλύσει τη ζωή μας και βρίσκονται ακόμη και στα χέρια «νηπίων και θηλαζόντων».

Τα προϊόντα δουλείας που εννοούμε είναι κυρίως δύο: το κοβάλτιο, για τις μπαταρίες των κινητών τηλεφώνων, και το κακάο με όλα τα προϊόντα που το περιέχουν.

Οι σκλάβοι του κοβαλτίου

Αναζητώντας στο διαδίκτυο τη φράση «Οι σκλάβοι του κοβαλτίου» θα συναντήσουμε άφθονα άρθρα που διεκτραγωδούν το φλέγον αυτό ζήτημα.

Οι συνθήκες εργασίας ανήλικων παιδιών σε πολλές χώρες του κόσμου είναι σοκαριστικές και αρκετές φορές φτάνουν στα μάτια της Δύσης, που συνήθως καταναλώνει τα αγαθά, φωτογραφίες και πλάνα από την εκμετάλλευση και τις άθλιες συνθήκες που βιώνουν οι ανήλικοι εργάτες.

Η κάμερα του δικτύου Sky News μπήκε μέσα στα «ορυχεία του τρόμου» στο Κονγκό και οι εικόνες που κατέγραψε είναι αρκετά σκληρές. Επτάχρονα παιδιά δουλεύουν ως σκλάβοι, υπό την απειλή βίας, στην εξόρυξη κοβαλτίου, ενός ορυκτού που χρησιμοποιείται στην παραγωγή κινητών τηλεφώνων.

Η κάμερα καταγράφει ένα παιδί πολύ μικρό σε ηλικία, το οποίο πονάει και υποφέρει, αλλά σπεύδει να κάνει αυτό που πρέπει, γιατί διαφορετικά θα δεχτεί τις συνέπειες που θα είναι αρκετά σκληρές.

Το Κονγκό θεωρείται ο μεγαλύτερος προμηθευτής του κοβαλτίου με ποσοστό που ξεπερνά το 60% της παγκόσμιας παραγωγής. Το πολύτιμο αυτό ορυκτό είναι ένα συστατικό που χρησιμοποιεί η Apple για την κατασκευή των iPhone και iPad, το οποίο προμηθεύεται για λογαριασμό της η κινέζικη εταιρία Huayou. Το κοβάλτιο είναι άκρως απαραίτητο για τη λειτουργία των μπαταριών λιθίου που χρησιμοποιούνται στα κινητά, αλλά και στους υπολογιστές.

Η Apple, μετά τη δημοσιοποίηση των εικόνων, δήλωσε πως «σταματούμε να προμηθευόμαστε κοβάλτιο από το Κονγκό». «Η νέα πολιτική θα ισχύσει έως ότου η αλυσίδα προμηθευτών του κοβαλτίου παρουσιάσει τους απαραίτητους κανόνες προστασίας για τους εργάτες και αποδείξει πως δεν χρησιμοποιούνται παιδιά στις εξορύξεις», ανέφερε ο τεχνολογικός κολοσσός.

Ενδεικτικά πρέπει να αναφερθεί πως στα ορυχεία του τρόμου εργάζονται παιδιά ακόμα και 4 ετών για 12 ώρες τη μέρα έναντι ποσού που ισοδυναμεί με 0,10 σεντς του ευρώ.

Αν όντως η εταιρία Apple είναι συνεπής στη δήλωσή της, η ίδια το ξέρει. Ούτως ή άλλως οι συσκευές αυτές δεν προορίζονται για την «εξυπηρέτηση» των ανθρώπων, αλλά είναι σχεδιασμένες έτσι, ώστε να προκαλούν συμπεριφορά εξάρτησης, με στόχο την αύξηση του οικονομικού κέρδους των εταιριών που τα κατασκευάζουν.

Οι σκλάβοι της σοκολάτας

Ας αναζητήσουμε τώρα στοιχεία με την ένδειξη «οι σκλάβοι της σοκολάτας»… Οι ανακαλύψεις θα είναι φρικτές. Δυστυχώς, υπάρχουν στις οικονομικά ανεπτυγμένες δικές μας χώρες άνθρωποι εξαρτημένοι από την κατανάλωση σοκολάτας και αυτό ιδίως συμβαίνει στα παιδιά. Θα τολμούσα να πω ότι η σοκολάτα είναι το ναρκωτικό των μικρών παιδιών – είναι σκληρό να στερήσεις από ένα παιδί την κατανάλωση σοκολάτας, στην οποία όλα ή σχεδόν όλα τα παιδιά των δικών μας κοινωνιών είναι κυριολεκτικά εθισμένα, παρότι αυτό πιθανώς σημαίνει ότι ποτέ δεν θα μάθει να τρώει φρούτα (μόνο χυμούς, πάλι αμφίβολης ποιότητας) και παρότι αυτή η σοκολάτα είναι προϊόν εκμετάλλευσης, δουλείας και βασανισμού άλλων παιδιών! Μια αναζήτηση του θέματος «Εξάρτηση από τη σοκολάτα» είναι πάρα πολύ διαφωτιστική.

Εδώ διαβάζουμε τα παρακάτω:

Η UNICEF υπολογίζει ότι περίπου μισό εκατομμύριο παιδιά εργάζονται σε φυτείες κακάο στην Ακτή Ελεφαντοστού, που από τη δεκαετία του ’70 διατηρεί την παγκόσμια πρωτιά στις εξαγωγές κακάο.

Οι ηλικίες των εργατών κυμαίνονται από 5 μέχρι 16 και προέρχονται ως επί το πλείστον απ’ τις φτωχότερες χώρες της ηπείρου, όπως είναι η Μπουργκίνα Φάσο και το Μάλι. Τα παιδιά πρέπει να μεταφέρουν σάκους που έχουν πολλαπλάσιο μέγεθος και βάρος απ’ τα ίδια. Αν καθυστερήσουν στη μεταφορά των σάκων, τιμωρούνται, συνήθως με μαστίγωμα.

Παιδιά κάτω των 10 ετών χειρίζονται τεράστια μαχαίρια, με τα οποία σπάνε το σκληρό κέλυφος που φιλοξενεί τους πολύτιμους καρπούς. Δεν υπάρχει ούτε ένα παιδί χωρίς σημάδια στο σώμα του, από τραυματισμούς με τα μαχαίρια. Μερικά έχουν χάσει ακόμα και τα χέρια τους, εξαιτίας μίας και μόνο κακώς υπολογισμένης κίνησης. Όταν μάθουν να χρησιμοποιούν τα θανατηφόρα εργαλεία της “δουλειάς” τους, έχουν να αντιμετωπίσουν άλλους κινδύνους. Καθημερινά, χρησιμοποιούν τοξικές ουσίες για να ραντίσουν τις φυτείες, χωρίς ίχνος προστασίας....

Τα παιδιά-δούλοι ονειρεύονται μόνο να αποδράσουν

Όταν τελειώνει η δουλειά της ημέρας, πολλές ώρες αφότου έχει πέσει το σκοτάδι, τα παιδιά τρώνε το φαγητό που τους αναλογεί: καλαμπόκι και μπανάνες. Είναι τα φθηνότερα τρόφιμα που κυκλοφορούν και σε καμία περίπτωση δεν καλύπτουν τις διατροφικές ανάγκες παιδιών σε ανάπτυξη.

Το βράδυ κοιμούνται πάνω στο ξύλινο πάτωμα. Τα ξημερώματα αρχίζουν πάλι τη δουλειά. Όσα παιδιά επιχείρησαν να αποδράσουν και πιάστηκαν, ξυλοκοπήθηκαν ανελέητα. Έχουν γίνει ελάχιστες ενέργειες για την καταπολέμηση της σύγχρονης παιδικής δουλείας. Δημιουργήθηκε ένα τυπικό πρωτόκολλο, που αν και ζητά την κατάργηση της παιδικής εργασίας, δεν επέβαλε καμία νομική μεταρρύθμιση. Η Ακτή Ελεφαντοστού είναι ο βασικός παραγωγός κακάο για γίγαντες όπως η Cadbury, η Hershey’s κι η Nestle. Συνεργάζονται πολύ διστακτικά με τις έρευνες της UNICEF, αρνούνται να αποκαλύψουν από που παίρνουν το κακάο τους. Απαγόρευσαν να υπάρχει ταμπέλα στα προϊόντα που θα ξεχώριζε αυτά που είχαν παραχθεί νόμιμα από αυτά που βασίζονταν σε παιδική εργασία, γιατί φοβήθηκαν ότι θα ξεκινούσε ένα γενικό μποϊκοτάζ προς όλα τα προϊόντα κακάο....

Μια ολόκληρη εξαρτημένη γενιά

Τέλος, ας επισημάνουμε ότι ολόκληρη η γενιά των σημερινών εφήβων και παιδιών (και πάμπολλοι ενήλικες φυσικά) βρίσκονται σε κατάσταση κανονικής εξάρτησης από τα «έξυπνα τηλέφωνα» που έχουν στην τσέπη τους, τα οποία στην πραγματικότητα δεν είναι τηλέφωνα αλλά ηλεκτρονικοί υπολογιστές τσέπης. Ας αναζητήσουμε στο διαδίκτυο το άρθρο της Κατερίνας Ράιλυ «Τα Εξαρτημένα Παιδιά του 21ου Αιώνα – Η γενιά που δεν έμαθε ποτέ πώς να ζει», το οποίο μπορεί ο ενδιαφερόμενος να διαβάσει εδώ.

Η απάντηση εδώ είναι ότι, κατά τη γνώμη μας, το διαδίκτυο και οι «έξυπνες συσκευές» θα έπρεπε να αντιμετωπίζονται ακριβώς όπως τα ναρκωτικά. Να απαγορεύονται αυστηρά για τα παιδιά. Ακόμη και για σχολικές εργασίες, θα έπρεπε να προτιμάται μια έρευνα στη βιβλιοθήκη. Ειλικρινά, για να μην πω ότι απολύτως τίποτε δεν προσφέρει σ’ έναν ανήλικο το διαδίκτυο, θα πω απλώς ότι θα ήταν σωστό να μην ενθαρρύνεται η χρήση του, γιατί βλέπουμε γύρω μας ότι η νέα γενιά δεν ζει στον αληθινό κόσμο, αλλά στον κόσμο της διαδικτυακής εξάρτησης.

Αποτέλεσμα των παραπάνω, μια γενιά με μειωμένη αντίληψη της πραγματικότητας (άγνοια ακόμη και βασικών στοιχείων της ιστορίας, του πολιτισμού, της γλώσσας και φυσικά της θρησκείας του ίδιου του λαού και του τόπου της) και σοβαρές μαθησιακές δυσκολίες ποικίλης φύσεως. Μια γενιά προγραμματισμένη στην εντέλεια για να γίνει κουρδισμένα ανθρωπάκια χειραγωγήσιμα από τις πολυεθνικές, τους «άρχοντες του αιώνος τούτου», ως ανυπεράσπιστοι εργαζόμενοι και απελπισμένοι, εθισμένοι καταναλωτές ταυτόχρονα.

Ποιος θα τους υπερασπιστεί; Αφήνω το ερώτημα αυτό να απαντηθεί από την αγία μας Εκκλησία και κάθε πνευματικό άνθρωπο – οι υπερασπιστές πάντως αυτού του λαού (ολόκληρου του δυτικού κόσμου, ή μάλλον όλου του κόσμου) στο νέο μεσαίωνα, στον οποίο βυθιζόμαστε, αναζητώνται…

Morocco To Timbuktu - An Arabian Adventure

Timbuktu - a place so mysterious, mythical and far, far away that it has become a legendary destination. Alice Morrison, Arabist, writer, explorer and Marrakech resident, follows what was once one of the world's richest trading networks - the infamous salt roads - across north Africa from the top of Morocco to the fabled sandstone city of Timbuktu. Trekking 2,000 miles across some of the deadliest landscapes on earth, Alice journeys deep into the history, culture and civilisation of both ancient and modern north Africa.

Standing at the crossroads between north and sub-Saharan Africa, and straddling the vast Sahara Desert and the great River Niger, the legendary trading post of Timbuktu, now one of the most dangerous places on earth, was founded over a thousand years ago, and its wealth was built on two precious commodities - gold and salt. Over the centuries, caravans with thousands of camels passed regularly between Timbuktu and Morocco. They were led across the deadly trans-Saharan 'salt roads' by a desert tribe called the Tuareg, who still patrol the desert today.

Setting off from Tangier, Alice learns how gold was in high demand in north Africa, to be minted into coins and adorn palaces. Its source was the gold mines of sub-Saharan Africa, and so the routes across the desert were forged. Hitching a ride in a crowded taxi, Alice passes through the Islamic city of Fes, home to the world's oldest university, where she stays in a caravanserai, the ancient traders' version of a motel with mule and camel parking, and helps prepare the merchant's dish of the day, camel meatballs.

Next, she catches the famous hippy train, the Marrakech Express, to the other northern terminus of trans-Saharan trade, the market town of Marrakech, where she learns how to treat leather the ancient way by wading up to her waist in vats of cow hide, poison and... pigeon poo. And in the grand square, Djemaa El Fnaa, she hears tall tales of the traders of old and their travels across the Sahara.

Continuing on foot, she treks in snow and storms across the Atlas Mountains dotted with Berber villages; the Berbers, or Amazigh, are the indigenous people of Morocco. On the other side of the Atlas, Alice discovers ancient caves of salt, the commodity which gave the salt roads their name.

Further south, she travels through valleys lined with casbahs, fortresses where the traders could stay in safety along the route. In the barren, unforgiving heat of the Jebel Saghro desert, she enlists the help of Berber nomads. They still graze their animals there and live the same traditional lifestyle. They help her on her way to the ancient city of Sijilmasa, whose forgotten ruins sit on the edge of the great Sahara Desert. It's a lost city, which was once a great trading post, a sanctuary for merchants arriving after the long trek across the Sahara from Timbuktu.

Alice Morrison takes on the vast Sahara in an epic camel trek over the dunes. At night by the campfire, she hears a shocking story of modern-day slavery from her trekking guide. The next day, her journey across the sands is halted by the closed border between Algeria and Morocco. Undeterred, Alice heads west on another trading route to Guelmim. She stops in Tamegroute, where she finds a hidden library of ancient books, including manuscripts by a 16th-century Malian scholar. It is evidence that the trans-Saharan trade routes transferred knowledge as well as gold and salt. Guelmim was home of Africa's largest camel market centuries ago, supplying the merchants for their caravans across the desert.

There is still a bustling lifestock market, but the salesmen tells Alice that now camels are mainly sold for food. Border disputes over Western Sahara bring Alice's journey along the salt roads to a complete halt. She has to fly across Africa to the capital of Mali, Bamako. Here, she gets to the source of Timbuktu's legendary wealth with a visit to a gold mine, and she rolls up her sleeves to try to unearth her own gold nugget. Flying the last leg into Timbuktu itself involves begging a seat on a UN flight. This ancient city has turned into one of the most dangerous places in the world after an incursion by Islamic extremists in 2012.

It lasted a year, and now UN soldiers keep a fragile peace in the city, having pushed the insurgents just a few miles back into the desert. When she finally reaches the City of Gold, Alice relives its glorious past with a visit to its world-famous mosques, the last surviving treasures of a bygone era. In the oldest of them, the Djinguereber mosque, she hears the tale of Mansa Musa, Mali's greatest king and the richest man in history.

List of West Africa hurricanes

This list of West Africa hurricanes includes all tropical cyclones which originated in the Atlantic and directly or indirectly affected the west coast of Africa or its surrounding islands, or both. Atlantic hurricanes seldom directly affect West Africa, the Cape Verde Islands, or the Canary Islands, since easterly winds carry the storms away from land, and most Atlantic storms that move off the African coast tend to be weak.

List of tropical cyclones

This is a list of tropical cyclones that have either made direct landfall in Western Africa and its surrounding islands or have come close to making landfall.

Before 1950

September 10, 1900: A tropical storm formed on September 8, 1900, at 10°N-18.5°W and moved northwestward. The storm rapidly gained strength as it reached hurricane on September 9. The hurricane continued moving northwestward as it bypassed the Cape Verde Islands to the west at Category 1 strength. The storm later reached Category 2 status after passing the islands. Despite its close proximity to the islands, it's unclear if any watches or warnings were issued nor were any reports of damage or fatalities reported from the storm.^[1]
August 29, 1901: A tropical depression formed on August 29 and moved westward where it became a tropical storm. The storm brushed the Cape Verde's before continuing on westward and becoming a hurricane. The storm caused no damage on the islands.^[2]
August 25, 1906: A tropical storm brushed the Cape Verde Islands as a 40 mph (64 km/h) tropical storm causing no damage. Days later, the storm strengthened into a Category 4 hurricane.^[3]
September 2, 1927 : A weak tropical storm passed through the Cape Verde Islands before becoming a category 2 hurricane. There was no recorded damage after the storm's passing through the islands.^[4]
September 6, 1928: The 1928 Lake Okeechobee Hurricane passed through the Cape Verde Islands as a weak tropical storm.^[5]
September 10, 1938: Before becoming a hurricane, the 1938 New England Hurricane passed through the Cape Verde Islands as a 40 mph (64 km/h) tropical storm.^[6]
September 5, 1947: The Fort Lauderdale Hurricane brushed the Cape Verde Islands as a Category 1 hurricane at 0000 UTC. There were no reports of damage or injuries from the hurricane.^[7]
September 5, 1948: A mid season hurricane brushed the Cape Verde Islands as a Category 1 storm. There were no reports of damage or injuries from that storm.^[8]

1950-1979

August 19, 1952: Tropical Depression Two struck the Cape Verde Islands before becoming a hurricane.^[9]
August 28, 1953: Tropical Depression Four passed through the Cape Verde Islands before becoming a hurricane.^[10]
September 3, 1957: While transitioning to a tropical storm, Tropical Depression Four passed south of the Cape Verde Islands causing no damage.^[11]
August 8, 1958: Tropical Depression Two passed through the Cape Verde Islands before reaching tropical storm strength. There were no reports of damage.^[12]
September 5, 1964: Tropical Depression Eight brushed the Cape Verde Islands before reaching tropical storm strength. The storm caused no known damage.^[13]
September 5, 1967: Tropical Depression Three passed through the Cape Verde Islands before becoming a hurricane.^[14]
October 5, 1967: Tropical Storm Ginger formed east of the Cape Verde Islands on October 5. The storm reached a peak intensity of 50 mph before dissipating two days later. Ginger's formation was the farthest east on record for an Atlantic tropical cyclone.^[15]^[16]
September 12, 1968: Tropical Depression Seven brushed the Cape Verde Islands before reaching tropical storm strength.^[17]
August 25, 1973: Tropical Depression Nine formed over western Africa at 10°N-15°W before reaching tropical storm strength.^[18]
September 15, 1973: Tropical Storm Ellen brushed the Cape Verde Islands as a 45 mph (72 km/h) tropical storm,^[19] before becoming a hurricane.
September 4, 1979: Tropical Depression Eleven brushed the northern Cape Verde Islands before becoming a hurricane.^[20]

1980-1999

Tropical Storm Beryl

September 4, 1980: Tropical Depression Nine brushed the northern Cape Verde Islands hours before becoming a hurricane.^[21]
August 29, 1982: Tropical Storm Beryl of 1982 passed south of the Cape Verde Islands, killing 3 people and injuring 112 people.^[22]^[23]
September 16, 1984: Tropical Depression Nine bypassed the Cape Verde Islands to the south before reaching tropical storm strength.^[24] The storm killed 31 people, mainly from landslides and flooding.^[23]
September 8, 1988: Tropical Storm Thirteen formed extremely close to western Africa on September 6 where it moved slightly northwestward and dissipated. It was not named because of its extreme location at the time, and it was originally thought to be a tropical depression. However, post storm analysis revealed that the system had maintained tropical storm strength for at least 48 hours. The storm produced heavy rain but caused no reported damage.
September 18, 1989: Before reaching hurricane status, Hurricane Erin passed through the Cape Verde Islands as a tropical depression, causing no damage.^[25]
September 21, 1998: Hurricane Jeanne of 1998 passed south of the Cape Verde Islands as a Category 1 hurricane.^[26] Because of Jeanne's rapid formation, forecasters predicted that the storm will bring tropical storm conditions to the Cape Verde Islands. However, the storm's center stayed off shore and there were no reports of damage.^[27]

2000-present

August 4, 2000: The tropical wave that later became Hurricane Alberto dropped 1 inch (25 mm) of rain across Dakar, Senegal and produced winds of 40 mph (64 km/h) off the West African coastline.^[28]
September 9, 2003: Tropical Depression Fourteen brushed the Cape Verde Islands after reaching peak intensity of 35 mph (56 km/h).^[29] The depression produced heavy rainfall and gusty winds to the islands.^[30]
November 23, 2005: Tropical Storm Delta, after meandering eastward in the Atlantic Ocean for several days, struck the Canary Islands shortly after becoming extratropical, and 70 mph (110 km/h) winds with 90 mph (150 km/h) gusts caused over $360 million (2005 USD) in damage and nineteen deaths.^[31]^[32] The remnants of Delta then struck Morocco, where no damage was reported.
August 21, 2006: Tropical Storm Debby passed south of the Cape Verde Islands as a tropical depression. A tropical storm warning was issued for the Cape Verde Islands, but was discontinued when Debby turned further westward and away from the islands.
September 9, 2010: Tropical Storm Igor passed about 30 miles (48 km) to the south of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands,^[33] bringing tropical storm force winds to Brava & Fogo,^[34] before reaching hurricane strength.
August 31, 2015: Hurricane Fred reached Category 1 strength as it hit Cape Verde, resulting in hurricane conditions across many of the islands. Seven people died when their fishing boat capsized off the coast of Guinea-Bissau, and another two fishermen were presumed dead after never returning to Boa Vista.
September 8, 2018: Tropical Storm Helene dropped heavy rainfall in Guinea, triggering flooding that claimed three lives in Doko.^[35]

Monitoring stations

The Cape Verde Islands has only one tropical cyclone monitoring station in Sal.^[36] In Western Africa, there are three tropical cyclone monitoring stations in Dakar, Senegal,^[37] Bamako, Mali^[38] and Niamey, Niger^[39]

Climatological statistics

At least 31 tropical cyclones have affected Western Africa and its surrounding islands since records began in 1851. The majority of the storms affect West Africa and Cape Verde islands during the months of August and September which are the active months of a typical Atlantic hurricane season.^[40]
